The Concept

The new building for the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) is located in Bellinzona in the Swiss canton of Ticino.
The IRB building consists of three floors, with large and transparent glass, without external interference. The curtain wall extends to the central triple-height atrium, which is the focal point of the project. Upper floors are clad with a state-of-the-art Closed Cavity Facade (CCF) developed by Gartner, and designed as a floor-to-ceiling unitized façade system over two floors. The large glass surfaces offer optimal requirements of today's modern research workplaces while maintaining the best climatic and building physics conditions all year round. On the other hand, the façade fulfills the ideal of approx. 50 dB, and has ideal properties for future research in the laboratories.

The façade ensures maximum light penetration in the winter months, while in the summer months, the perforated louvers of the blinds reduce unwanted heat loads. The outside view of the façade features an offset with three lowered panels made of anodized aluminum sheets (3 mm, ¹/₈'' thick) in order to avoid full planarity. Instead, the glass panels stand out prominently from the building conveying a particular architectural look to the building. The eight corner units of the façade offer a special highlight. They have been manufactured in one piece as profile-free all-glass corner units at the Gartner factory.

The Project
Scope of Work

Design & engineering, manufacturing, and installation of a double-story closed cavity façade (CCF), 4 mm (⁵/₃₂'') aluminum spandrel panels, and story-high corner units with a side length of 3.20 m (10.50 ft). In total, the façade consists of 132 units.
