The Concept

Suvarnabhumi Airport is a first-class international airport located in Racha Thewa in the Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan Province, about 25 kilometres (16 mi) east of downtown Bangkok. Covering an area of 20,000 Rai (8,000 acres), the airport has 7 four-story concourse buildings A, B, C, D, E, F and G with concourse A serving domestic passengers and the other concourses dedicated to international passengers. The airport has two parallel runways, the east runway is 4,000 m long and 60 m wide, the west runway is 3,700 m long and 60 m wide, and 2 parallel taxiways to accommodate simultaneous departures and arrivals. The overall design of the glazed façade’s steel trusses was meant to blend into the curved profile. New weather, noise and heat protection solutions have been developed for the building envelop and installed mechanical equipment to operate synergically in creating optimal comfort with minimum energy consumption. Innovative and integrated architectural, structural and environmental design was the choice for Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The Project
Scope of Work

Stick system curtain wall and canopy cladding for the concourses, point-fixed glass wall for 51 passenger boarding bridges, interior glass balustrade and partitions.

New materials and advanced technological systems were developed along with unusual construction processes to meet the design goals. The final outcome presents advanced long span, lightweight steel structures, exposed pre-cast concrete frames, clear or low-E coated glass, a triple-layered translucent membrane, an integrated cooling system that makes use of both the thermal mass of concrete and water as a low energy carrier, and a displacement ventilation system with minimal air-changes. These components and parts are more effective in their overall operative framework than in their conventional roles. They maximize daylight and comfort, yet minimize the use of energy with significant cost savings in terms of life cycle. The installed cooling power has been cut down to almost 50% the power of a conventional system.

Permasteelisa Group undertaken the external package of the concourses with over 110,000 sqm (1.2 million sq ft) of stick system curtain wall for the typical bays and the continuous metal canopies (3 m x 6,000 m) for a total of 36,000 sqm (387,500 sq ft) of solid sheet roof and soffit cladding panels on structural steel cantilevered frames. The 51 passenger boarding bridges feature jumbo sized laminated glass panels and aluminum composite cladding panels, interiors consist of stainless steel trims and handrail cable systems and triple ply laminated glass flooring. The internal package consisted of glass balustrades, partitions and handrails, steel cladding and glass point fixed lift shafts for an overall area of approx. 200,000 sqm (2.1 milliono sq ft).
