The Concept

Burlingame Point is one of the largest commercial projects developed on a waterfront prime location in California, between Silicon Valley and San Francisco. This visionary and dynamic commercial development comprises four office buildings, an amenity building and parking structure, situated on a 72,800 sqm (18 acres) site at 300 Airport Boulevard, in Burlingame, California and it has been fully leased to Facebook.
Designed by world-renowned architectural studio Gensler and developed by Kylli, the office buildings range from five to seven stories tall and offer 74,700 sqm (804,000 sq ft) of Class A office and R&D space. The campus, which also includes a two-story amenities structure and a six-story parking garage, is arranged around open plazas and lush landscaping, interconnected by walking paths and offering unobstructed views of the bay.

The design of the campus took inspiration from the San Francisco Bay, with the buildings rounded corners and outdoor terraces shaped by the prevailing wind patterns. The undulating fins of the facades are a vertical interpretation of the light on water surrounding the site, and they are designed to maximize views outside while minimizing unwanted solar gain and glare inside. To achieve this effect, the design team and Permasteelisa explored various material options for the fins before selecting Corian® solid surface material. This material was chosen for its ability to be thermoformed to a unique three-dimensional shape, in addition to durability, texture, color and other considerations. Permasteelisa designers in Italy and the US worked with Gensler to create an attachment detail for the fins which allowed for removal and replacement of both the fins and the glass, utilizing concealed fasteners on the interior split mullions. The fins are fabricated in 2.4 m (8 ft) lengths which are carefully bonded together in the factory, creating a seamless vertical element up to 6.1 m (20 ft) in length which was shipped to site and attached to the curtain wall units just prior to installation.

The project is registered with the certification goal of LEED Gold®
