Concept design as a matrix: The Faces of Façades podcast, Tim Debets
Lead Concept Design, Tim Debets, recently appeared on The Faces of Façade podcast hosted by Arron Seder to talk about the reality of early stage concept design in façade projects.
The conversation begins with Tim explaining how he moved from mechanical engineering into construction, drawn by the joy of being able to visit a city with your family, look up at a building, and say “I worked on that 20 years ago!” He outlines what concept design means in practice, describing the front end of façade projects as a matrix, where changing one dial moves cost, programme and carbon. He goes on to emphasise the importance of people skills in façade engineering and the importance of young people entering the industry focusing on collaboration and communication. Looking to the future, he highlights the growing importance of embodied carbon from the outset of projects and why he believes climate resilience will be key to concept design.
