Shanghai Foxconn Plaza was one of the last riverside properties in the Lujiazui Financial District of Shanghai, completed in 2019. Like its neighbouring buildings Jin Mao Building and the Shanghai World Finance Centre, it is a symbol of China’s economic growth.

The project was developed by electronics manufacturer Shanghai as a prime office building. Architect Kris Yao Artech created a completely transparent façade, meeting high sustainability standards to fulfil the demanding thermal requirements in Shanghai.

The project

The concept

The building has an externally ventilated double-skin façade with a unitised outer skin and a window wall as the internal façade. The outer skin features panel mullions, transoms and entire panels at different angles to create a geometric zig-zag pattern. The distance between the external and internal façades is between 300 and 600mm.

What did we do?

We designed, engineered, manufactured and installed 45,000 sqm of façade, including double-skin façade with triangular horizontal sections and external ventilation via a device mounted on the panels’ window skill. We also supplied a single-skin unitised façade system with an LED screen behind, plus a two-storey high stick system façade at ground floor. In order to achieve the architectural intent, very close tolerances had to be met for butt joints throughout installation, as well as special static requirements such as increased wind loads.
