One and Two New Ludgate

London, UK

The One and Two New Ludgate development, with façade by our Gartner brand, was named The City of London Building of the Year 2016.

When it opened, the development transformed a previously neglected, underused area of the city. Today it provides an aesthetically pleasing commercial office, retail and restaurant space, next to the Old Bailey Court and with views of St. Paul’s Cathedral. The two buildings are connected by a public piazza and both stand 10 storeys high. Despite this, they have strikingly different structures and façades.

The project

The concept

Although developed at the same time, the two buildings are quite different in structure and appearance. One New Ludgate is a steel-framed building with a façade based on the concept of a masonry grid. White precast concrete frames complement the floor-to-ceiling glazing.

Two New Ludgate has a concrete frame and its façade features an interplay of colour, with glass louvres in 24 different colours. Each of the storey-high glazed elements has a glass reinforced concrete (GRC) ledge at its top and bottom. On the ground floor, a curved steel façade creates a striking entrance area.

What did we do?

We designed, engineered, manufactured and installed a total of 20,896 sqm of façade for the two buildings – 13,150 sqm for One New Ludgate and 7,746 sqm for Two New Ludgate.

For One New Ludgate, this included large elements with storey-high glazing, curved elements with three different radii, sliding doors, rectangular louvres of stone and glass, and small canopies on the ground floor.

For Two New Ludgate, we supplied cranked and curved façades, GRC ledges, corner elements of different sizes and angles, and coloured glass louvres. The façade design for the entrance area is completely round and includes handcrafted, curved steel transoms.
