Built between 1959 and 1962, the Commerzbank Tower in Düsseldorf is one of the most important high-rise buildings of early post-war modernism. With an original façade by Gartner, we were delighted to be appointed to revitalise and restore the building.

The 12-storey tower includes a roof terrace and a ground floor with a surrounding glass-fin façade. The building accommodates a hotel, as well as offices.

The project

The concept

The new building façade had to meet strict monument protection requirements, while at the same time fulfilling modern standards of energy efficiency and user comfort. These were met by applying insulation to the interior frame construction.

What did we do?

After dismantling the units on site, we disassembled and cleaned them, fabricated a new framework, and placed this on top of the dismantled and repaired outer shell. We then carried out interior and exterior sealing, installed parallel opening windows to about half the standard units (for good natural ventilation) and applied insulation and roll-in rubber. We glazed the ground floor with a large-scale, highly transparent and frameless façade, stabilised with glass fins and steel to emphasise the impressive concrete construction from the 1960s.
