Hamad International Airport in Qatar is one of the most architecturally important – and busiest – international airports in the world. Having designed, engineered, manufactured and installed the steel-and-glass façades for the entire hub, including the roof for three sides of the main terminal, we have been contracted to provide maintenance services both under warranty and as the result of site inspections.
A site inspection and joint survey with the glass supplier revealed the need to replace double-glazed units. In total, we replaced over 1,400 pieces of glass over a two-year period – a huge undertaking in a live airport, with the added pressure of the run-up to the World Cup in 2022.
Previously, we also undertook upgrades to the main terminal building’s metal fascia panels. High winds had been removing large panels, creating a health and safety hazard. We redesigned the panels for increased structural integrity to combat the risk, improving the fixing mechanisms and how the panels were secured.
