Gioia 22 is a landmark office tower in Milan’s recently developed business district, which incorporates unprecedented standards of technological innovation and environmental sustainability.

The building features a retail podium and a new urban public piazza, and overlooks the large Biblioteca degli Alberi Park. Its tower has full floor-to-ceiling glazing and stands 120m tall, redefining the Porta Nuova and Milan’s skyline. The high-performance glass façade is made up of around 3,000 unitised units, with glass panels incorporating external solar shading devices.

The project

The concept

According to Gregg Jones of Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, the dynamic form of the tower “is the result of the convergence of two urban grids, and at the same time the response to the need to optimise light and solar energy”. As this suggests, sustainability was a priority and the façade contributed to the building’s achievement of LEED Platinum.

What did we do?

We designed, engineered, manufactured and installed around 22,400 sqm of façade, including around 3,000 unitised units with a combination of vertical and tilted low-emission glass panels incorporating external solar shading devices. The façade features many sustainable elements, including high-performance triple-glazed glass units, insulated and thermally broken aluminium profiles, and around 2,500 units with integrated photovoltaic modules. The podium façade system consists of a stick curtain wall, while the lobby design consists of a façade with point fixing supports.
