The People Mover System is an innovative, environmentally-friendly transport system connecting facilities within Education City, a development on the outskirts of the city of Doha in Qatar.

The Qatar Foundation for Education, Science & Community Development needed to create 17 tram stations consisting of columns, rope nets and glazing, plus 34 waiting rooms. Extreme temperatures and sunlight, acoustics, passenger comfort and the ability to charge trams were all important considerations.

The project

The concept

To counteract the effects of weather, the translucent glass canopies’ triple-laminated safety glass has a hydrophobic coating on the upper surface, while tinted and acid-etched glass at the underside scatters the light. The framework conveying current to the tram is fixed under the canopies, with sun protection and acoustic comfort provided by a glass fibre-reinforced plaster ceiling.

What did we do?

We designed, engineered, manufactured and installed 17 stations consisting of columns, rope nets and glazing, as well as 34 waiting rooms consisting of steel, glazing and benches. The total surface area provided was 12,300 sqm.
