Climate Tower, on the meadows of the River Rhine in Bonn, has been home to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) since 2022.

At a height of 68m, the building is one of the tallest in the former West German capital city. The building was designed to be an energy-saving, passive structure, using regenerative energy sources. Winter gardens extending over two floors replace corner offices and there is a plant-filled atrium. Views over the Rhine and reflections of the river, hills and sky in the glittering façade reinforce the building’s purpose as the home of environmental experts.

The project

The concept

From the 2nd to the 16th floor, the building features naturally ventilated, unitised double-skin façade. The arrangement of the façade units is staggered by half a grid dimension on each floor, with all-glass corner units. Four winter gardens featuring plant walls replace corner offices.

What did we do?

We designed, engineered, manufactured and installed a total of 7,456 sqm of façade. This included ventilated double-skin, unitised façade consisting of triple insulation glazing at the inside and laminated safety glazing at the outside, including external blinds and internal glare protection. Other elements supplied included 1,416 sqm of stick system steel façades for the lower floors and winter gardens, canopies, a revolving door and a number of other door systems.
