The neo-Georgian building at 44 Union Square, Manhattan – also known as the Tammany Hall Building – was designated a city landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2013.

We are proud to have played a part in the renovation of this important historic icon through the design, engineering, manufacture and installation of a glass domed roof, added to honour Chief Tamanend, the namesake of the Tammany Society political organisation that had originally used the building as its headquarters.

The project

The concept

The three-storey building formerly featured an unassuming hipped roof, a traditional structure with sides sloping downwards to the walls. The new glass dome was designed to classical proportions when observed from Union Square, with terracotta sunshades provide solar shading and evoking the former slate roof.

What did we do?

We designed, engineered, manufactured and installed the dome-shaped glass roof on a steel grid shell structure. The roof is made of 850 isosceles triangular panels, covering a total surface area of approximately 1,100 sqm. The bolted tube/node structure was formed by standard hollow sections and machined steel nodes, glazed with IGU. The welded steel structure was formed by standard hollow sections, glazed with IGU and partly including terracotta sun-shading elements.
