181 Fremont

San Francisco, California, USA

Completed in 2018, the award-winning 181 Fremont is a slender skyscraper with 55 floors of offices and residential apartments. Towering to 210m to the roof, a spire brings the total height to 245m.

The third tallest building in San Francisco, the building was designed to minimise damage in case of an earthquake. Today, it houses Strava’s offices in the city.

The project

The concept

The building is modernist, with a strong focus on sustainability and neighbourhood integration. Its exoskeletal design allows for interior column-free spaces. The façade is faceted for greater expressiveness.

What did we do?

We designed, engineered, manufactured and installed the highly complex curtain wall with a lap-shingle profile and large diagonal columns that change the angle of the façade at every intersection. The ground floor has an 8.5m high cable net wall. At the fourth floor we created a glass bridge to the Transbay terminal.
