The Shard nominated for 2013 “Best Tall Building Award - Europe”

November 12, 2013 - The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, the organization that has supported, interlinked and provided information to the construction and tall building sectors since 1969, has awarded the “The Shard” with the 2013Best Tall Building Award - Europe”.

This award, assigned during the 12th Annual Awards Symposium held on November 7 at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, is particularly important as it is granted by a jury that takes into consideration the building intrinsic features as well as its integration with the urban environment, its environmental sustainability and its positive effect on the city appearance, its inhabitants and the quality of life.

The construction of The Shard, Europe’s tallest building, started in 2009 and was completed last year. It is located in the centre of London yet it has an Italian soul: it has been designed by the Genovese architect Renzo Piano and its façades have been designed, manufactured and installed by Permasteelisa, a company, based in Vittorio Veneto (Treviso - Italy), world leader in the design and installation of architectural envelopes for tall buildings.

Permasteelisa has also realized the façade for the Devon Energy Center, located in Oklahoma City and listed as finalist in the Americas category, for the ADAC Headquarters in Munich, Germany, and for the New Babylon in The Hague, Netherlands, both finalists in the Europe category.

Located in the Southwark district, The Shard is 306 meter tall, distributed on 73 floors, including residences, offices, commercial spaces and accommodation facilities. The cladding covers the entire structure of “the shard” and was entrusted to the Dutch company Scheldebouw, which is wholly owned by Permasteelisa Group and operates in Northern Europe and the UK. Over 10,000 glass and aluminum elements, featuring integrated blinds, were used, consisting of approximately 20,000 individual panels.

The Shard, together with the entire Permasteelisa Group Project Gallery, is now available on the new Permasteelisa Group Interactive web tool dedicated to portable devices available at www.permasteelisagroup.com/universe

Permasteelisa Universe is an innovative, digital, web/smartphone/tablet-optimized application for portable devices, featuring a new model of navigation and a new approach to the organization of the website content. It is specifically designed to enhance the way users receive and use information from the extensive project gallery, including more than 1,300 images.

Users are driven by an intuitive system and an interesting visual storytelling through an experiential navigation. By exploring the three main sections - Building Type, Business Unit and Area/Hub - the content is available through a system of semantic web connections, offering all the information, main data, types, geolocation, interactive maps and related links for each project.
