Permasteelisa Hong Kong Limited attends the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital Thank You Tour 2016

September 2016 - Over the last few years Permasteelisa Hong Kong Limited has sponsored and supported with a large group of employees the annual Orbis Walk for Sight. Orbis is a charity forged by an alliance between medical and aviation industries aiming to improve global eye health by preventing and treating the causes of avoidable blindness. Based on our role as a sponsor we have been invited to attend the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital Thank You Tour 2016 on 27 September 2016 at Hong Kong.

On the tour knowledgeably supported and conducted by Orbis staff we have learned that the former cargo plane MD-10 donated by a global courier company has been retrofitted by a specialist designer to house among others the Patient Care & Laser Room, the Operating Room and the Pre- & Post-Operative Care Room (Recovery Room), all in modular design. Respecting the customs and rules of the different world religions the bathroom facilities provide the opportunity for ritual hand and foot washing before prayers can be conducted. In order to make the younger patients more comfortable on board of the mobile hospital, for many it is the first experience being on a plane and surrounded by a lot of foreigners, one of the sponsors has provided teddy bears to relax before and welcoming them after the operation.

Besides being a mobile hospital the plane serves also as a training centre for doctors and nurses by offering a classroom on board with a large screen broadcasting the operations live to the audience and also by live broadcasting the operations with on-board technology to other hospitals and education centres. Orbis operates the only Flying Eye Hospital worldwide with volunteer Doctors and other volunteer medical professionals plus, last but not least, Pilots using their leisure doing what they can do as one of the pilots said, helping to improve eye health in 92 countries.

Mr Iain Turner has received the sponsor award on behalf of Permasteelisa. It was a very memorable event to attend.
