Walt Disney Concert Hall

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the striking Walt Disney Concert Hall has become an architectural landmark and one of the most iconic buildings in the city.

The curved and complex stainless steel skin of the unusual exterior is created by more than 6,000 panels that resemble silver sails. According to the LA Philharmonic, it is designed to be one of the most acoustically sophisticated concert halls in the world, providing both visual and aural intimacy for an unparalleled musical experience.

The project

The concept

The building consists of several materials, including pre-cast concrete, a glazed curtain wall, a stainless steel metal panel system, metal studs and exterior plaster. The façade features a very complex skin shape clad in ‘angel-hair’ finish curved steel panels, with geometric glazing in the auditorium.

What did we do?

We designed, manufactured and installed 14,800 sqm of stainless steel cladding and around 4,000 sqm of curtain wall and skylights for the auditorium. The stainless steel panels were field formed by hand as they were attached to the steel stud back-up system.
