Suvarnabhumi Airport

Bangkok, Thailand

Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, opened in 2006, is one of the largest by area in the world, with over 500,000 sqm of enclosed space.

The arrival and departure halls are fully glazed, combining steel, concrete, glass and membrane for architectural, structural and environmental benefits. A large roof trellis placed over the complex of buildings unifies the site and shades the structures below from direct sunlight. The trellis also shades outdoor areas, which feature landscaped courtyards for use by passengers.

The project

The concept

The airport’s main terminal roof was designed with façade elements in a cantilevered, wave-like form. The design was intended to be energy efficient, maximising daylight and incorporating sunshade louvres and a cooling system.

What did we do?

We designed, engineered, fabricated and installed over 110,000 sqm of stick system curtain wall for the bays. For the continuous metal canopies, we supplied a total of 36,000 sqm of solid sheet roof and soffit cladding panels on structural steel cantilevered frames.

The 51 passenger boarding bridges are made up of jumbo-sized laminated glass and aluminium composite cladding panels. Interiors feature stainless steel trims, handrail cable systems and triple ply laminated glass flooring.
