One57, is a 73-storey, 306m high skyscraper sitting between Sixth and Seventh Avenues in the Midtown neighbourhood of Manhattan, south west of Central Park.

The building houses a luxury hotel and some of the most expensive apartments in the city. When developed it was nicknamed ‘The Billionaire Building’ and at the time set the record for the city’s most and second most expensive residences.

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Christian de Portzamparc, the soaring tower gives extraordinary views and an abundance of natural light.

The project

The concept

One57 is an artistic masterpiece, featuring an elegant custom curtain wall with setbacks, which emulate a cascading waterfall. The building’s silhouette is completely covered with transparent glass and aluminium tightly stretched over the curves and volumes of the tower. Two different types of glass, one clear and the other dark, create a striped effect on the south face and accentuate the structure.

What did we do?

Working collaboratively, Permasteelisa North America and Permasteelisa designed, engineered, manufactured and installed 47,300 sqm of façade made up of 8,200 units, of which 2,200 are different configurations (only 300 units were the same).

The design and engineering of the components took two years to complete as the team sought to strike the perfect balance between the technical requirements of the project and the high performance expected of the materials selected.
