Nationale-Nederlanden Building

Prague, Czech Republic

Designed by Frank Gehry in collaboration with the Croation-Czech architect Vlado Milunic, the Nationale-Nederlanden Building in Prague is affectionately known as ‘the Dancing House’ or ‘Ginger & Fred’.

Constructed in the middle of a square of historic buildings, the building has two main parts – a glass tower that narrows at half its height and is supported by curved pillars; and a second tower that features undulating mouldings and unaligned windows. On the top of the building is a large twisted metal structure nicknamed ‘Medusa’.

The project

The concept

‘Fred’ is the cylindrical tower, holding ‘Ginger’ – a light, sinuous glass tower. The dancing shape is supported by 99 concrete panels, each a different shape and dimension. The complex definition of the surface was challenging for our team and required complex engineering.

What did we do?

In total, we designed, engineered, manufactured and installed 25,000 sqm of architectural envelope.
