Lloyd’s Building

London, UK

The Lloyd’s Building in London, an example of high-tech architecture that opened back in 1986, was the brainchild of architect Richard Rogers.

The building has been home to Lloyd’s of London – the city’s insurance and reinsurance marketplace – since its opening. It was awarded Grade 1 listed building status in 2011, in recognition of its historical and architectural importance.

The project

The concept

The building uses innovative materials and design characteristics, including the external positioning of its service systems (e.g. elevators, ducts and pipes). A large ground floor underwriting room is overlooked by galleries, forming a 60m high atrium lit by a vaulted glass roof.

What did we do?

The façade was designed, engineered, manufactured and installed by our Gartner brand, working closely with structural engineers Ove Arup & Partners. The façade is mainly made of stainless steel cladding and glass, giving the building its characteristic high-tech appearance. In total, we supplied 28,000 sqm of cladding and curtain wall.
