Jin Mao Tower

Shanghai, China

Standing at 420.5m, the 88-storey Jin Mao Tower is one of the world’s most iconic buildings, with a design that reflects ancient Chinese pagodas.

When illuminated at night, the tower stands out as a beacon against the Shanghai skyline. Located in the Pudong District, the multi-purpose structure incorporates office and hotel space, retail facilities and service amenities. Interestingly, it contains several references to the number 8, which is considered lucky in China, with an octagonal core and 88 storeys.

The project

The concept

The stepped steel-and-glass façade gives the tower its ornamental appearance, which is reminiscent of a pagoda or a bamboo grove.

What did we do?

We designed, manufactured and installed approximately 83,000 sqm of cladding and curtain wall. The façade was designed as a stick system from ground floor to level 3, with unitised panels and vertical mullions from level 4 upwards. To give the tower its distinctly ornamented exterior, aluminium fins with stainless steel hollow sections were fixed to the vertical mullions. The terraces that result from the stepped façade design are covered with aluminium sheets.
