De Rotterdam – conceived as a ‘vertical city’ and completed in 2013 – is a multifunctional skyscraper on the banks of the De Maas River in the major port city of Rotterdam.

De Rotterdam is the tallest building in the Netherlands, with three towers rising to a maximum height of 151m. The building houses offices, apartments, a hotel, conference facilities, shops, restaurants and cafés.

The project

The concept

Architect OMA conceived De Rotterdam’s design as a response to urban density, both in its function and form. The building’s stacked towers are arranged in a subtly irregular cluster, providing intriguing views from different perspectives. Sustainability is integral to the building, which incorporates environmental features such as energy-saving lighting controls, reduced-consumption water systems, maximum use of natural light and sustainable energy production.

What did we do?

We designed, engineered, manufactured and installed over 45,000 sqm of unitised system curtain wall for De Rotterdam. The exterior envelope is made up of five different types of elements, including a unitised curtain wall with outward opening windows for the offices, a façade module with a spandrel at floor edge for the hotel, and a continuous glass pane without fins for between the towers. The podium also features a glass curtain wall. All elements have a high-performance coating, including a fire-resistant façade for the side of the building facing the river, where tankers could pose a fire hazard.
