BMW Welt is a futuristic vehicle delivery and experience centre that has become a visual icon thanks to its spectacular design.

The daring construction – completed in 2007 next to BMW’s headquarters in Munich – includes publicly accessible areas connected by a lightweight, sweeping bridge structure. Over 2 million people visited during its first year of operation.

The project

The concept

Triangular units are used for the construction to create the geometry required by the architect. The building’s dynamic silhouette tapers into a ring-shaped support, before connecting to the roof construction. A double cone made of glass and steel supports the 16,000 sqm cloud-shaped roof construction and gives it a floating appearance.

What did we do?

We designed, engineered, manufactured and installed the main façade, comprising 5,500 sqm of horizontal, vertical and diagonal sections, stainless steel panels and glazed roofs. We also supplied 16,000 sqm of cloud-shaped roof construction. The façade is made from a modified mullion and transom system, with the roof supported by just 11 columns to create a floating effect.
