When 200 George Street opened in Sydney in 2015, it represented a new breed of office tower with a warm timber and clear glass façade.

The rounded tower is wrapped in a glazed envelope containing in-built timber blinds that automatically adjust with the shifting sun, transforming the building from a completely transparent glass skyscraper into a tower of golden-brown wood. The combination of natural materials like wood and sandstone with cutting-edge technology like our Closed Cavity Façade (CCF) system created one of Australia’s most sustainable, avant-garde buildings.

The project

The concept

The building façade was designed to enable the play of light reflecting off the 37 storeys. Our CCF technology was chosen for its transparency, sustainability and solar shading – motorised timber venetian blinds inside the cavity adjust automatically with the changing angle of the sun’s rays. In the podium, vertical timber shading elements provide further solar protection.

What did we do?

We designed, engineered, manufactured and installed approximately 20,000 sqm of Closed Cavity Façade – a total of 3,000 façade units. In addition, we supplied the 3,000 timber blinds within the cavity, plus 415 exterior vertical timber sun-shading elements designed to control streetscape glare.
